Show Sports Here and There byAlAMett ' Baseball in the Industrial league lea-gue doesn't look quite the same without a Gemmell club entry. But the. ex-club players are helping help-ing the other teams in the league. lea-gue. Helper has the biggest sprinkling of Gemmell men Herb Babcock, George Slug;;, Frank Zaccaria and Daryl Robertson Rob-ertson are with the Carbon county coun-ty entry. Now they have added Gene Fish, who in my book was as good as any pitcher in this league. If Gene gets in shape i you will hear from Helper in the second half. Mandel Wilson is playing second base for Provo and" young Bailey Santistevan is pitching for the same club. Provo is in the thick of the fight for the first half. About some of the other boys that have played in the Industrial Indus-trial league: Wayne Tucker, formerly of Brigham and Pin-ney, Pin-ney, is with Kansas City. So is John Sturm who was with Kearns. "Big Hooks" Ioit that was with Pinney and Kearns is with San Antonio in the Texas Tex-as league. Mike Sertich who was with Pinney and who was to play with Gemmell is catching catch-ing for the saml club. Jack Craine who played first base for Brigham last year is with the New York Giants. Mike Wood the good looking catcher for Provo last season is in the eastern circuit. Last week the baseball fans of the Industrial wheel received a shock to read where George Risk the great looking young infield-er infield-er from Kearns and Brigham City was one of the victims of the bus accident that killed eight of the Spokane Washington ball players. George belonged to the New York Yankees and was highly high-ly regarded by every scout that had seen him in action. He was hitting .308 at the time of the accident. "Pee Wee" Bass was on the Spokane club early in the season but had left the club. A good break for "Pee Wee". I think one of the nicest things the Industrial league could do would be to play an all-star benefit game for George's widow. Kent Peterson, the great young left hander, formerly with Pinney, Pin-ney, now owned by Cincinnati, is due home early this month Kent has been overseas for about two yean. Pitched some great ball in the islands. Just thought I would report on these boys to show what kind of ball the old Industrial league has put out. The Bingham Merchants can't seem to get going in the Salt Lake Softball league. Lost another an-other heart breaker to the Elks club, 2 to 0 Tuesday night. The BDAA league have had some swell games the past week. The Bingham American Legion team hasn't lost a game this season, sea-son, their latest victim was the West Side team from Salt Lake. I umpired the game but I can't remember the score. Something like 20 to 7. This boy Jack Knudsen Knud-sen can fire that ball and "Pee Wee" Gust on short stop can play for my money. Don't forget the summer bowling bowl-ing league. See you next week. AL |
