D C. C where she will represent the Salt Lake Telegram and the state of Utah in the 1949 National National Na Na- lional Spelling Bee finals For Marie rarie an eighth grade student at Madison Madison Madison Madi Madi- son junior high school in Granite school district district district dis dis- it was her first major train trip Accompanied Accompanied Accompanied by Mrs Frances Darger society editor of f the Telegram Marie was starting on a two- two eek cross-country cross tour during which shed she'd see Chicago Cincinnati and St. St Louis and spend an entire week in Washington D. D C. C before competing competing competing com com- in the spelling bee finals next Friday Marie winner of the Telegrams Telegram's 1949 Utah bee aee was accompanied to the depot by her mother nother and father two brothers and a host of friends from her South Salt Lake community who came to wish her good luck in her quest for or or national fame and fortune She was bolstered by a long list of words which she and Mrs Darger were going to work on during th the tha train trip to the finals but Marie made no rash promises about her possibilities in the national finals I Ill just do the best I can the excited teen teenager teenager teenager ager said as she boarded the train The 6 30 am a.m. departure time was reflected in many of Maries Marie's friends' friends faces but she was wide awake as she contemplated the excitement of the the next few days When hen she arrives inthe in inthe inthe the nations nation's capital shell she'll join state champions from approximately 40 other states in a continual continual continual con con- round of entertainment and sightseeing preceding the finals on Friday Shell She'll meet high government officials and with the other students will be the toast of Washington ashington for the entire week If she wins the national bee shell she'll be awarded a cash I prize and in addition will receive an expense all-expense i tour to New York for the week end following the bee And if that doesn't make it the trip of a I Il l lifetime at least for a year old girl Maried I like to know what would I
