| Show Our Women omen In I n Service Not Strutting By RUTH MILLETT MILIEU People who belittle the girls In khaki and navy blue and what they are trying to do by saying Oh they just want to get into uniform and show o off evidently evident evident- ly haven't talk talked d to any W WAVES or SPARS about the matter The girls are not In the service for the sake of the uniform Women may go for uniforms worn by men but they have to learn to like wearing them themselves An officer in the SPARS says that she and all the uniformed women she knows had hard time getting used to uniforms It was something they had to learn At first first she says our confidence confidence confidence con con- in ourselves took a terrific terrific ter ter- rifle nosedive when we found ourselves working In strange new military clothes But in time we learned how to be comfortable and at ease a e ein in uniforms and now we are no longer conscious of ot them at all aU That didn't come however until we had mastered our new jobs It is like beginners at skiing or riding who put on the correct clothes for the sport They seldom seldom seldom sel sel- dom look happy or comfortable in them until they have learned to ski or ride They're Still Women Furthermore this o oft officer f f i ice c e r makes no bones about the fact that women do miss the pretty colorful clothes they have given up Clothes have mattered to them for so long that getting into uniforms isn't accomplished without a few backward glances toward alluring shop windows So I for one am convinced that persons who say the girls relieve uniformed desk men for tor actual combat service just so they can strut in uniforms dont don't know what they are talking about |
