Show No More Food Surpluses THE T THE agriculture department has announced the suspension of the food stamp program through which in the past several years surplus surplus sur stir plus farm crops have been eaten by the undernourished under under- 4 nourished needy rather than dumped on the market to depress prices or dumped into the sea or burned because they could not be profitably profitably prof prof- sold The decision to abandon this program Is logical because there simply is 18 no longer any justification for it on either ground that ground that of helping the farmer by removing surpluses or of helping the needy by giving them more food to eat We have almost no more food surpluses surpluses sur sur- pluses and with the anticipated 1943 shortage of food it is very unlikely we will have any at all soon As it has hes been functioning recently recent recent- recently ly the food stamp program has been artificially daily and improperly helping to increase food prices On the other hand as a result of the war boom and Increased employment there are relatively few undernourished needy and nd those few who are left can be aided better in a direct fashion Abandonment of the food stamp program should not however be regarded as aban- aban of the principle of eating our food surpluses rather than wasting them So long longas as there are any undernourished people inI in I America we should see to it that they eat the surplus food The food stamp program did that It worked pretty well and if we get back bak ba ba- k some time to a a. condition of surplus food and undernourished needy it could well be bet jl reestablished S t |
