S army army or navy airmen have been In actio there have been Utah pilots at the controls ls of fighters or bombers or Utah bombardi bombardiers bom born bardis bardi s navigators gunners observers radio radiomen radiomen men men mcp etc doing their various jobs as members of our our fighting air forces This has been brought home to I S repeatedly by news stories detailing combat experiences of these Utah men and by personal per per- ronal lIonal accounts of some of them who have returned on leave We ai all know of Utah's most famous flying son liOn Lieutenant Colonel Chesley Gordon Peterson Peterson Pe Pe- Pe- Pe terson of Santaquin flying ace with an Ameri Amen American American can group in the Brit British Jh R RAP A F and now a a. high ranking officer with the U. U S. S air force in England But Colonel Peterson is far from being the only Utahn who is making a name for himself and for Utah in air combat In Britain B tain In north Africa in Egypt in India In China in Australia and the southwest Pacific Pacific Pacific Pa Pa- in Hawaii and Alaska many Utah naval and army airmen are seeing action constantly giving good accounts of themselves and many of them winning honors and medals Just Monday Mon the story of the participation of five four of them from Salt Lake City in a a. big raid in north Africa gave us usall usall usall all an idea of the s sort rt of fighting our Utah boys are doing In that raid the opposition from German l fighter planes and antiaircraft guns was terrific Many of the Flying Fortresses Fortresses Fortresses For For- tresses were daz damaged aged by shells and bullets Five planes were missing after the raid But 10 German Gerran Ge m planes were shot down and the job of blasting docks and other military obI objectives objectives ob ob- ob- ob I- I in Tunis and was accomplished The who took part in this i raid were Captain Peter J. J Jr Lieutenant Keith leIth C. C M Monson Edward W. W Robertson and Parmer W. W V. V Stevenson all of Salt SaIt Lake City and Lieutenant George W. W Waldron of Gar- Gar field In the same days day's paper another story told of action seen by another pair of Salt Sait Lake fighting airmen over Kiska Alaska in which both men fighter pilots suffered minor leg wounds during flights over this Japanese held d outpost in the Aleutians These two pilots pilot were were Lieutenant Richard Booth Gardner and Lieutenant Oliver Wayman The following day a story from Australia revealed that Lieutenant Bernard E. E Anderson Ander son a a. bombardier from Fayette Utah W was vs S SI Saw awarded aw the distinguished service cross for I extraordinary heroism in action And so it goes Every few days there is mention of some Utahn who vrho has been in action somewhere in this world-wide world conflict cannot help but take pride in their exploits And it brings the war close and makes it seem home close close enough andreal andreal and very real real to to us at home I I real enough that we should as we thrill and andas andas andas as we cheer determine determine- that just as these Utah boys on every war front are doing their part to I achieve victory so will we part on the home front Their skill their courage and their sacrifice merit as well as our praise the fullest measure measure of our support We must not let them down |
