Show I Now On Its It's to from Up Japan J jAPAN TAPAN has bas sent a new ambassador to the thel J United States He to be I l' seems a very pleasant pleasant pleas picas ant fellow v an old friend pf f our president laI fa- fa a I millar with this country which h he ho says he loves and with its people whom he says he admires y The new ambassador is Admiral former Japanese minister of foreign affairs y and reputedly representative of the more mod mod- f erate element In Japan Admiral says his aim Is to establish establish lish better relations between his country and the United States He says war between the two countries is unthinkable and that he does not believe war is likely to eventuate President Roosevelt himself recently ex ex- pressed much the same opinion He said he did not think there was danger of war in the Pacific We sincerely hope that Admiral and Mr Roosevelt are correct in their opinions and that they made their statements sincerely and not with their fingers Ingers crossed Personally we cant can't agree that war with Japan is unthinkable unthinkable un thinkable or that there is no danger of ot it We hope conflict can be avoided but we think I there are a number of Us ifs which must be answered before anyone can say positively that It will be avoided j. j f For instance recently news dispatches have haver haverJ r rJ been telling of a war scare sweeping the fari far i cast with Australia holding an emergency defense defense de- de lense meeting Americans in the far tar east urged to leave at once Dutch merchant shipping warned to take refuge in neutral ports and reported big Japanese naval concentrations Inthe in inthe the gulf gul of Siam Slam and the South China sea right next door to Singapore and the Dutch East Indies Maybe Mayhe that's just another scare But if it war does come between this country and Japan it is most likely to be as the result of Just such a move by br Japan southward as this war alarm seems to f foreshadow If It Japan moves on Singapore Singapore Singa Singa- pore or the Dutch East Indies it is hardly possible the United States will stand idly by The question of war or peace between these two great powers which for so many years have been good friends and good customers of each other seems therefore to be entirely up to Japan It If Japan wants to avoid war with the United States the answer is easy she easy she should just stay away from th the Dutch East Indies Singapore I and the Philippines We want to be ba friends with Japan We certainly tai y dont don't want to go to war with her But there are limits to friendship and and pacifism Japan ought to know those limits just as well as we do We dont don't doubt in the least our president president dent and our diplomatic officials have made very clear to Japan Just what those limits are From now on its it's up to the Japanese Were We're very glad to welcome the smiling Admiral as Japans Japan's new ambassador But in all fairness we think we should warn I him that we arent aren't going to be deceived or I diverted by smiles and line fine words The actions of the Japanese government will speak a great deal louder than words and It is on those actions act ac- ac l t ns that peace b between tween Japan and the United States depends |
