Show Utah Sets the Pace in Safety WITH less than three weeks to go to the end of the year the state of Utah appears sure of a very commendable record for traffic safety safety safety safe safe- ty in 1940 This is true despite the fact that as of December 10 we had seven more deaths in inthe inthe inthe the state than at the corresponding date last year There are two reasons why despite more deaths Utah's record is good First is the fact that all those additional deaths to date over 1939 and three more for good measure are axe accounted for by Salt Lake City This city's traffic fatality record as of December 10 stands at 31 compared to 21 at atthe atthe the same date last year an increase of 10 Thus for the state as a whole exclusive of Salt Lake City the record is better than last year Second is the fact that national traffic fatality fatality fatality fa fa- fa- fa totals are up this year over 1939 and fatalities fatalities fatalities fa fa- fa- fa in neighboring states with the same relative traffic conditions travel and problems are well above the 1939 totals In Idaho for instance there were deaths at af this date last year and today there are In all of last year Idaho had only so it is probable Idaho will have about a 13 per cent increase in all of 1940 Wyoming has deaths to date compared compared compared com com- pared to in all of 1939 so Wyoming can expect likewise about a 13 per cent increase Utah on the other hand has only deaths to date compared to for all of 1939 which would indicate the fatality increase for the whole state will be only 3 or 4 per cent I If that analysis of the safety picture holds true Utah will be able to take pride in its showing snowIng Specially proud should be the Utah Traffic Safety council and the various agencies of the state and local governments which have cooperated so wholeheartedly in the state safety program They have done an excellent job for lor safety and it seems their efforts are showing real results |
