G MURRAY Telegram Correspondent PRICE When PRICE When a small city constructs the first large steel culinary culinary culi- culi nary ary water reservoir in the state the fact is worthy of note However However Howver How- How ever ver when a one man gang proceeds to fabricate 90 tons tons' of heavy sheet icet steel into such a tank unaided it brings forth a visit from many any a doubting Thomas Such is the experience of Lieb Miller Miller Milr Mil- Mil ler r local blacksmith and machine shop proprietor p l Early arly in August of 1938 Mr Miler Miller Miller Mil- Mil ler er was low bidder on one of four contracts to improve the local water wa- wa ter er system His contract called for forr the IB building of a gallon steel eel storage reservoir just north of the Price high school for the sum um of According to Mr rr Miller he planned to hire the thE- labor on the tank ank while he devoted his time to tos his s blacksmith shop here and thus provide employment for three m men menn menon n non on n the project When the tank was started his troubles also started in the form of labor disputes Rather than submit submit sub- sub mit it to o demands made upon him he IB declared that he would build the tank ank himself without aid anc and this he le has proceeded ded to do thus hus earning earning earn- earn ing ng him fame as the local one man gang The tank when finished will be 80 0 f feet et in diameter and 25 feet high and nd will be made up of steel sheets seven even feet wide by 40 feet long I which weigh more than one and one half tons each according to George W. W Cassity government in- in engineer for the project In spite of the handicaps of working working work- work ing g alone Mr Miller has completed ed d 84 per cent of the project and is only four per cent behind schedule Mr Miller built his own derrick with ith which he hoists the cumbersome cumbersome cumber- cumber some ome sheets into position after which he joins them together with electric welding The sheets are laid up p in bricklaying fashion and are curved to fit the tank as they are put ut in place The complete project includes preparation reparation of the tank site the laying aying of feet of inch 12 water main and the building of the tank at a total cost of and is being being being be be- ing done under a P W A grant of 45 per cent of the cost The tank will be coated with a rustproof sur surface face on the inside and aluminum paint on the exterior and is scheduled for completion by December 23 Mr Cassity said the tank can probably be completed by I that time alth although ugh Mr Miller lost considerable time waiting for the excavation work to be done However However However How How- ever he has been gaining on the schedule since he started the steel stee work |
