LOUIS S S1 S. GATES CATES TO GET 1 I Louis S. S Cates Gates president of the Phelps Dodge corporation and former former former for for- mer general manager of the Utah Copper company has been cited for the William Lawrence Saunders gold medal award of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical cal Engineers it was learned here Monday The selection of Mr Cates Gates for the honor was made by the board of directors of the institute In achieving this honor Mr Cates joins the ranks of such famous engineers as the late John Hays Has Hammond Herbert Hoover Colonel D. D C. C Jackling Walter Valter H. H Aldridge and others The citation was written by Colonel Colonel Colonel Col Col- onel Jackling president of the Utah Copper company under whom Mr Cates worked for 20 years and who Is Ls now president of the institute It recognizes his achievements as an engineer in the development of scale large-scale methods of mining copper copper cop cop- per ores and as an administrator of jf important mining and metallurgical metallurgical metal metal- enterprises Mr Cates who began his career as timekeeper for the old Boston Consolidated mine at Bigham in 1903 became general manager of the Utah Copper company in 1919
