Show fI S by TOMMIE PORTER While Frank K Baker Telegram sports editor is out ut of the he city this column will be conducted by members of the sports staff are dreaming day this spring about the possibility possibility possibility pos pos- of setting a precedent for consecutive victories in inthe inthe the annual state high school track and field meet which will be held May 1 13 3 at the Utah stadium Provo high school has captured the state crown in each of the last three years under the t tutelage of Glen Simmons and the thought of being the the first first Utah school ever to win the title four times in a row is certainly something something something some some- thing to dream about S SIn In the year 34 history of Utah high school track competition competition com corn petition only Provo and arid three other schools have held the I title three times in a row Old Salt Lake City high held the top in 1904 06 only 1904 only two other schools Park City and Ogden competed compete in the first meet in 1904 1904 Murdock Murdock academy academy academy acad acad- emy at Beaver won in 1913 15 and East high of Salt Lake City won in 20 1919 Ogden twice held the title two years in a row and Spanish Fork and West high of Salt Lake City each had it two consecutive years but no school has has' yet gained the top four times in a row And in the college competition of the Rocky Mountain conference e only Utah ever gained the four four in n-a- n S row distinction winning winning- in 27 26 and only Brigham Brigham Brig Brig- ham Young ever won three in a row Provo is proud of its high school coach and justly so Since taking the reins there in 1923 Simmons has piloted the Bulldogs to the Region Three track title six siz times tunes and the state cinder crown three times In the same period the have won the regional football laurels si six times and have held the basketball basketball basketball basket basket- ball honors three tunes times in addition to sharing that title with Nephi one year The list of fine athletes developed by Simmons at Provo Isan is isan isan an imposing tribute to the ability of the Bulldogs' Bulldogs coach and in includes includes includes in- in such outstanding performers as Max Warner now coach at Park City Reed Collins former state all-state basketball and football football football foot foot- ball ace and present recreation director at Provo Don Sanky Dixon with his brother Fred of the Utah tennis doubles championship for six years Max Hap R. all-R. M M. C. C football tackle Bliss Hoover baseball and g gridiron flash Steve Murdock rugged little grid star Burle BurIe Buke Robison state all-state and R. all-R. M. M C.
