Show ON THE HOME FRONT ; Civilian defense organization has passed the preliminary f.tage, with selection of emergency officers now complete. Reports given last evening at the public civilian defense meeting indicated that groundwork has been laid with care. '1 he precautionary measures which have been taken assure Ringham of an available supply of informed men to direct our course in emergency. Approximately 7,500 male residents in Utah will be registered re-gistered in the 20-21 year-old age group on February 16, Major II. A. Rich, state director of selective service, has announced. The huge 1942 national program for tanks and guns and planes and ships will cost more than $400 for every citizen of these United States. War conditions, the rubber shortage and changes reflected in the nation's auto salesrooms and auto supply stores, will create an increase in the demands made on local merchants. More people will be doing their shopping at home and will look to home town merchants for more varied services. For this reason merchants will find themselves called, upon to supply customers that, in the normal course of events, would never have been regular patrons. It was a matter of tires and cars at first, initial incidents inci-dents on the road of self sacrifice in the releasing of materials ma-terials to the nation's vast arms production program. The vital need for alcohol and more alcohol for manufacture of explosives along with food shipments for the lend-lease program pro-gram has caused a near approach to shortage in sugar. Housewives were told in local stores Friday that retail pur-, chases of sugar had been limited to five pounds per customer custom-er as the government's order to freeze stocks took effect. Because sugar is made from cane, and sugar cane molasses has been largely used to make alcohol, the OPM has ordered 1 distillers equipped to make alcohol from corn or grain to use these materials exclusively. Western sugar men advise that warehouses are filled with sugar in Utah, Idaho and other, sections, and present stocks are ample to last the current year for essential military and civilian needs. Any curtailment curtail-ment of imports from areas involved in the war is expected to be met from substantial increases in domestic sugar beet production in 1942. The OPM restriction on purchases was, made in part to prevent abnormal buying for hoarding. "Everything I own is mine because I am an Ameri-" Ameri-" can and live in the best country in the world. The govern-; govern-; ment can have everything I possess if it is needed to win this war", says an average citizen of Bingham Canyon, voicing what so many have thought and privately resolved. |
