Dr Fishbein's Health Talks By fly DR MORRIS 1 FISHBEIN When you hear of cancer you ou probably relate it to people of advanced advanced ad ad- age This Is generally true especially of cancer of the stomach The reason you fail to hear so 50 much of this condition among younger people peo pIe is that when it occurs occur among them hem it is often oHen overlooked Yet a a recent survey of medical reports brought wrought out as many as 20 cases of cancer of the stomach In persons be be- tween 13 and 20 Cancer of the stomach is one of the he most serious forms of this devastating devastating de de- de disease In very few cases even when the condition is discovered discovered ered cred exceedingly early is it possible to o save life lire The symptoms of the disease when it t occurs in the young are much the same ame as when it occurs in older peo pee pie Because of or the nature of the cancerous growth there is likel likely to be pain There Is also likely to be b blood passed assed from the body in the excretions lons or occasionally vomited and there here are arc of course severe disturbances disturbances disturb disturb- ances of digestion c cUse Use of the ray X-ray is probably the most important in all methods of studying cases of this type A cancer caner can can- er in the stomach as Veil vell as one elsewhere in the body sometimes gives rise to secondary cancers This occurs also in younger people who develop cancer of the stomach In m many instances nothing was done early and secondary tumors were vere found in other parts of the thc body jody in such numbers th that lt operation operation opera- opera tion ion was considered impossible as a n means of help for these cases I 00 e Certainly all evidence that is Js available available avail avail- able indicates for cancer of the stomach stomach ach particularly the extreme sity ity of diagnosing the disease at the earliest possible moment It must be recognized that the disease is exceedingly exceed exceed- rare in young people but cases actually do occur they do the course of the disease is much more snore rapid in the young than in the old Whereas in older people survival may go on for several years the life of the young person who develops a cancer of the stomach must musi be estimated in terms of months and weeks It is not well welt however to assume a hopeless attitude in relationship to o cancer of any part of the body Scientific res research arch everywhere is concerning itself with this problem Every case that occurs must be made the subject of study to develop de dc- dc new facts which can be used for or benefit of other unfortunate victims vic vic- tims ims of this disease
