N Y Sept 5 Given 5 Given up for drowned Mrs Ann Steffens 32 of or Ne New Orleans drifted at t West Hampton beach today after clinging for more than eight hours to the underside of an overturned over turned power powerboat boat She Sho was treated for exhaustion but otherwise suffered no ill effects from her terrifying experience in the whipped storm waters of off Long island Emil Steffens 65 of Center Moriches Moriches Mor Mor- iches pilot of the craft was drowned A party of six persons set out yesterday yes cs afternoon in the power boat Amies Those aboard besides the were Mr and Mrs Fred L mke and Laurence Moffat of New NewYork NewYork York and Richard of New Orleans i Shortly before nightfall a storm arose The small boat shipped water and the engine stalled Steffens tried frantically to restart the engine as the boat out of control cyra gyrated d dangerously dan dais In the churning Then suddenly in the darkness a huge wave struck the craft broadside The boat turned over over throwing all the occupants into the water The Lemkes Moffat MoUnt and under the shouted encouragement of Steffens started swimming toward shore to to- gether Finally a n co coast st guard boat rescued them Then the coast went back to look for Steffens and the New Orleans woman Before the rescuers could reach him Steffens sank from exhaustion and drowned Unable to find the overturned boat the coast g guardsmen n believed Mrs Steffens also had drowned But Mrs Jn of the drowned pilot although an excellent ex cx- swimmer had elected to s stay y with the boat She swam beneath the overturned vessel and linked her arms armsto arms armsto armsto to the cross struts At intervals durIng during dur duro In ing the night she said she swam out outto outto outto to determine her position She said she was sleepy and ne nearly rl exhausted when sh she felt her feet touch bottom She emerged and waded wad wad- ed ashore Persons living nearby went to her aid |
