Show tup Tr--m Wmn Its History Narrated in a Sunday School Essay. Following is tho essay which took the Sunday School prizj in the Tenth Ward last Sunday. The succeful contributor was Fred Rosslter. Tho Tenth Ward was organized in February, IS19. Among its early sy-tilcrs were Iral Evans, Conrad Klienman, Zeming Draper, Isamiah Draper, John Steele, William Strong, John Proctor, David Pette-grew, Pette-grew, Thomas Speirs and Isaac Iianey. The two last named built the first two residences in the Ward in the spring of 18J3. They were both two-stery adobe buildings containing con-taining four rooms each. One year after the Ward's organization, In ISS3, a fence was built around it, each man building au amount In proportion to the property occupied ty him. Around this fence (which was removed in 1S571 a guard, with Daniel Tyler as their leader, was stationed to protect the erops. Woods took temporary charge. Dtvid Pcttegrew was ordained or-dained first Bishop of the ward February 22a J, 1S19. His coun sellors were Daniel Tyler aud San-ford San-ford Porter. John Steels was appointed ap-pointed as tho first ckrk of the ward on April 1st. 1B19. December Otb, 1S53, Conrad Kleinman and Alfred Cordon were appointed counselors coun-selors to Bishop Pettegrew, both the others having removed from the ward Subsequently Elders Cordon and Klienman removing to another ward, their places were filled by Adam Speirs and John Proctor. BIsnop Pettegrew died December 31st, 1SG3, when his Counselors had charge of the ward until January, 1S87, when John Proctor was ordained or-dained Bishop and Adam Speirs and William Ashman as his Counselor. Coun-selor. John Proctor died February Febru-ary 12th. 1871. Adam Speirs was appointed to take temporary charge of the ward. He acted by virtue of his appointment until June 20th, 1S77, when ho wasordained Bishop with James C. Woods and William GriQln as Counselors. Elders Speirs and Griffin were ordained and set apart as High Priests by Apostle John Taylor, and Elder Woods by Apostle'George Q Cannon. Can-non. Counselor (Jrlflhi removing to another ward in 1SS9, Elder Joseph Knldlngton was ordained Second Counselor to Bishop Speirs in his place. The population of the ward in 1S50 was 192, In 1SS0 OS.1!, and in 1SS9 nearly 3000. |
