F PHILIPS All is quiet quiet stillness No lio election no police re reports reports re- re ports no murders no wars in our little world How quiet h how w still how happy how lonesome how free tree from excitement What a a. life I It is the dream of the poets actually lived and fulfilled This was Salt Lake City QUy in September 1848 It is all ail detailed in a aletter aletter aletter letter written by bj Parley P. P Pratt to his brother who was then on a mission to Great Britain He tells of the voyage from England to New Orleans and from there t to Winter Vinter Quarters On June 4 the start was wasI I made from the Missouri river t to the valley of ot the Great Salt lake The caravan consisted of ot wagons wag wag- ons Salt Lake was reached September 25 0 9 The housing of the people was completed in November November No No- vember just after snow began falling and the plowIng plowing plowing plow plow- ing of ot the ground was begun in snow several inches deep The winter was mild and pleasant nt with several several sev sev- cv- cv eral light snows sno and severe frosts Horses sheep and cattle weathered the winter in fine shape Spring plowing was begun In March Planting of Indian Indiancorn Indiancorn Indiancorn corn was sas completed in May Maj There were vegetables grown In plenty A spring wheat crop was wis heavy about bushels being harvested in the valley the first year ear 9 0 S Health of the colony during the first year ear of ot the occupation was remarkable with no prevailing sickness sickness sickness sick sick- ness and but few deaths Everybody says Apostle Pratt in his letter seems strong and healthy and full lull of activity It is certainly the most delightful cli climate climate climate cli- cli mate I had ever lived in Irrigation water ater is being obtained from streams that flow from the mountains and is conducted over nearly all farms in every di direction dl- dl S S STo o S oTo To care for the sawing of timbers the colony had three sawmills which were operated by water power with another one near completion For the grinding of grain there was one water mill in operation while another big substantial flour mill was ready for grinding Then the colony colon had a threshing machine run by water which threshed about bushels in about 12 hours From Indian corn stalks sugar was extract extracted d. d w The first celebration of a a. harvest festival took place on August 10 1848 when a a. large number of people probably were gathered under a Do big awning where crops were on exhibition A feast followed the exhibit the products being all varieties of food produced I |
