Show Something r Wrong Wrong- rong In Our Colleges Editor Peoples People's Corner We are told that the battle for ed edUcation education education ed- ed in our colleges undue undue- emphasis emphasis emphasis em em- of non ac activities activities ac- ac or perhaps excess social life one one or more moro or all all are arc imperiling the health of the flower of American American Ameri Ameri- can manhood and womanhood Dr Lee Ferguson of Western Reserve calls the matter to notice It is to tope be pe studied at an Important gatherIng gather gather- In ing at Syracuse next month I wonder if Dr Ferguson has missed the essential fact Is it not true that our colleges are arc growing too large by reason of the fact that many young oun men and women are seeking college educations who should instead plunge into life as soon as they leave grammar schools Or at least the high schools I am amno amnot amnot no not one to say that education should be denied anyone but we must admit admit ad ad- mit that there are arc those who for one reason or another cannot profit by l higher gher education I T believe rf recent recant rf nh chanC in priti- priti cation have br brought about bo t STad graduation 1 i tion Uon of students from primary and secondary schools at an age far too low ow to make them fit tit subjects to tackle ackle the arduous grind of the college col- col lege man or woman who is to make a success pf of himself or herself More thoroughgoing preparation In n the lower schools that will lit fit it young men and women better to hold holdup holdup holdup up under the exacting demands of college work that will justify more rigid entrance requirements or better better better bet bet- ter prepare the youth for fighting the economic battle without a college education appears to me inc to be the formula that must be consulted Dr Ferguson suggests the possibility possibility possibility that college curricula are too stern in their demands I think not Further I believe that If there is an easing up along this line our col- col leges will be turning out men and women for Cor the arts and professions who are arc sadly lacking in foundation work R.
