Show WE ALL MUST COOPERATE In a recent statement made by Herman W. Stein-kraus, Stein-kraus, president of the Chamber of Commerce of the United State's, might be found some good advice by which individuals and business might profit. ( Stating that every American believes that the soundest kind of program to follow is to bring government gov-ernment expenditures somewhere within expected income, in-come, he made the following statements: "All Americans know what is meant by good times and bad times. We all want good times and we are all concerned as to what kind of times we are heading for. , "On the basis of cold statistics, business is now off from it's post-war peak. But the need for confidence confi-dence is a lot greater than the need for statistics. "What is the basis on which we can have confidence? confi-dence? What is business doing about the situation. "There is one thing it is doing about it. It is true that employment figures are off. This is not as bad as it seems because the total number of people em-1 ployed is much larger than it was even a year ago. One of the very good signs is that all of us are beginning begin-ning to place a higher value on our own jobs. That goes for the men from the top job right down to the average worker. That is also a good thing because it means we also do a better job. "Nothing insures good times more than high individual in-dividual production and a sincere willingness of people peo-ple to put their shoulders to the wheel to get costs down. "Of course we look to the government to do it's share too. From the long range standpoint, the report of the Hoover Commission points out the method of giving more efficient government operation at lower cost, but for the immediate situation they believe the American people will be best served if the government does not spend more than it takes in. "Just as every business man finds it necessary to re-examine all of his expenditures to see if he is getting get-ting his money's worth, so the government can do the same and make economics wherever possible. "Now all these things will help us. to go through the readjustment and avoid that period of bad times. There are other encouraging signs. People's savings are large and this makes for a good deal of individual security. "Our country is sound. Our system is flexible and not rigid, but there is one great danger and that is that some groups or individuals will use this period to blame our difficulties on others. This is not the way to accomplish the results that we must accomplish. "Anyone who sells the country short today is wrong." |
