Show Cooperative To Build Plant Here BnDding Of ffcw $50,000 Vegetable Packing, Shipping Plant Planned Plant To Serve Large Area, Will Employ Nearly 100 People And Is Expected To Be Completed in August for Handling Produce Springville is to be the site of a new industrial enterprise, it was announced Wednesday, with the purchase of a portion of the John S. Boyer farm for the erection of a new $50,000 vegetable packing plant. The plant will be erected by the Utah Celery Co-Operative and is to be owned and operated by growers in the vicinity in which it serves. John W. Gerber xf American Fork, manager of the Co-Opera-tive, said Tuesday that the plant building will be approximately 60 feet wide and 300 feet long, one story high, of cinder brick construction. con-struction. It will have a 10-foot platform on each side and is to be equipped with the most modern machinery available for the handling hand-ling of vegetables for shipping. Construction of the plant will begin, early in February on the five-acre plot purchased from Miss Mary Boyer, on what was a part of the John S. Boyer farm, an ideal location for the enterprise, enter-prise, according to Mr. Gerber. Several other locations were considered con-sidered in Springvdle before, a suitable site was found. The plant will serve farmers from Provo on the north, to Pay-son Pay-son on the south, and may also handle some produce unable to be handled at the American Fork plant. Mr. Gerber said a number of crops will be handled, including celery, potatoes, cabbage, onions, carrots, lettuce, etc., all of which can be raised in this locality at a good profit and of a quality to meet the best markets. The new plant will furnish an outlet for an increased production of these crops in this area. The new plant will employ in the neighborhood of 100 people, most of whom will be local persons, per-sons, the manager reported. The plant is expeted to be ready for operation about August. Included in the equipment to be installed is a modern celery washing wash-ing machine with a capacity of washing a carload of celery every ev-ery hour. Also, a potato washing wash-ing machine capable of washing a carload of potatoes every two hours. The Co-Operative has a plant at Cedar City and is planning to build another plant at Midvale. |
