Show PIONEER MOTHER DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS Funeral services will be conducted con-ducted today at 2 p. m., in the First ward chapel for Mrs. Frances Fran-ces G. Petedson, widow of John N. Peterson, and the oldest pioneer pio-neer woman in Springville, who died Sunday afternoon at the family fam-ily residence, Fourth East, Fourth South street. Friends may call at the family residence before the services. Burial Bur-ial will be in the City cemetery, directed by A. Y. Wheeler and Son mortuary. Mrs. Peterson was born in Upper Up-per Wield, Hampshire,' England, September 2, 1856, a daughter of George and Mary Pearson Giles. She came to Utah with her father and step-mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Thome Giles, as converts to the L. D. S. church, in 1868. The family fam-ily crossed the plains by ox-team and settled in Springville, where Mrs. Peterson had made her home since. She had been active in church work, especially in Relief Society, in which she served as a teacher for many years. She had lived for 65 years on the same corner in a home made originally of adobe fashioned by hand, the work of herself and husband. Mrs. Peterson was known to go out of her way to assist those in distress and gave freely to all charitable organizations. She lived by the maxim, "It is better to wear out than- to rust out," and up to within a short time before her death she was actively engaged in her home duties. Since the death of her husband in 1926 she maintained her home, together with a flower and vegetable garden. gar-den. She was a charter member of Camp Kolob D. U. P. She was married in the Salt Lake endowment house, Salt Lake City, January 12, 1874. She was the mother of twelve sons and daughters and two adopted. adopt-ed. Six are living, as follows: George A. Peterson, Mrs. Ida Horton, Mrs. Zelma Beardall and Andrew G. Peterson, Springville; Mrs. Lela P. Lisonbe, Salt Lake City; Leslie Peterson, Dragerton; also thirty-one grandchildren; thirty-six great - grandchildren; four great, great-grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters, Alfred Giles, Mrs. Agnes McKee, Mrs. Hattie Williams and James Giles, Springville; Mrs. Allie Knight, Caliente, Nev.; Frank Giles, Wilson, Wil-son, Wyo.; Edward Giles, Glens Ferry, Ida. Five of her descendants descend-ants are in the armed forces. |
