Show RED DEVIL HIGHLIGHTS By J. F. Wlngate In 1917 the Springville High School won its first state basketball basket-ball tournament Since that time the school has established a very enviable record in basketball history, his-tory, having won an entrance into the tournament seventeen years out of twenty-three. The team of 1917 was an outstanding out-standing team offensively, winning win-ning all of its games by large margins. In one of the division games they scored 118 points to their opponents 14. This we think may be one for Ripley. In 1923 the school repeated by again winning the state tournament tourna-ment for the second time. It was at this tournament that the school won the name of fighting Red Devils. Fight, speed and endurance en-durance have characterized the teams from this school ever since its last tournament pennant. Besides Be-sides winning two state pennants, the school has place, 3rd, 4th, and 7th respectively. This year the Springville team established a rather unimpressive pre-season record, winning only two out of five games. Because of this they were not given very much of a chance to win the crown in the Nebo Division. But to the surprise of many, the team improved im-proved gradually and steadily until un-til they were proved to be the dominant factor in basketball in the Nebo Division. Their record of games in the Division bears out this statement. Out of nine games played the Springville team won seven games and only lost two. They scored 27 5 points to their opponents 226. Two of the games lost were only by a margin of one point. And two of the games were won in an extra period, per-iod, which shows good balance and poise. This year the school is again represented by an outstanding team. Art Hughes, the coach, who is the youngest coach in the state has proved his ability by developing de-veloping such a fine team from only inexperienced, average material. ma-terial. In the history of this school for the past thirty years there has never been turned out a team that will surpass this year's team in scholarship, teamwork, condition, and clean observance of training rules. The town and school express ex-press confidence in this team one-hundred one-hundred per cent and wre predict many surprises for those who un-derate un-derate the possibilities of this team. |
