CITATION GIVEN LOCAL MAN FOR GALLANTRY " Lt. James Grant Nielson of this city has been given special citation and awarded a silver star for gallantry gal-lantry in action in Tunisia, North Africa, according to word received here. The citation reads as follows: "James G. Nielson, Lt. Co. C, Inf. For Gallantry in Action on the morning of March , 1943, in Tunisia, North Africa. While his company was making an assault on the enemy, Lt. Nielson went ahead of his organization, and with disregard for personal safety, safe-ty, singlehanded captured an enemy ene-my machine gun nest and, although al-though faced with heavy machine gun and mortar fire, brought back four enemy prisoners. Lt. Niel-son's Niel-son's initiative, bravery, and coolness cool-ness under fire, set a fine example exam-ple for his men, and contributed considerable to the success of the assault and is a credit to the armed forces of the United States." A son of J. C. and the late Elda Nielson, Lt. Nielson enlisted in the armed forces Nov. 7, 1941. He was commissioned a second lieutenant July 18," 1942, at Fort Benning, Ga., and landed in North Africa with the first expeditionary forces to that country on Nov. 7, 1942, just one year from the day he enlisted. He was made a first lieutenant some time in June. The most recent letter from Lt. Nielson was dated July 3, in which he tells so far as censorship permits, per-mits, of his experiences in the battles bat-tles of North Africa. Lt. Nielson has a brother, Earl Nielson, second class petty officer in the Navy, stationed somewhere in the South Pacific. |
