Show 4 Twelve Men in Guard Go to Camp Williams By CORPORAL LEON BLACKLEY Twelve fellows from Springville spent three enjoyable days at Camp Williams, where we received instructions in war tactics and maneuvers, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We arrived there at 3 p. m., and then proceeded to get our barracks bar-racks in shape and our beds made. We then went to mess. After mess we spent an instructive evening at the camp theater and saw films on army tactics and riot control. We then marched to bed, leaving a few of the men out on guard duty. Saturday morning, we rolled out at 5:45 a. m. We were given 15 minutes to dress, wash and make our beds before roll call and mess. This was the morning that Oran Nielson, John Jay Russell and myself my-self were made corporals. After mess, we marched to the target range and received instruction instruc-tion on the handling of the Army Springfield rifle, by Lt. Maloney from Fort Douglas. We all took turns shooting the rifles and also 30-caliber machine guns. We then went to mess which everyone was waiting for. Later we marched over to get our gas masks and the company was taken to the gas chamber which was filled with tear gas. After we were in, Lt. Maloney told us to take our masks off in the room. It was our first experience exper-ience with tear gas. The lieutenant showed us' some bombs which are used against a machine nest. One of these is the white phosphorus bomb. It will eat a man alive at forty yards. We then went through all the deadly gases being used in present warfare. war-fare. After the gas drill, we went to mess and then took a short rest period and saw some more films. That night I, with a number of other fellows, were put on guard duty. On Sunday, we had some more gas drills and we were also given instruction on how to wire TNT and how" to place it to do the most (Continued on Page 10) 12 MEN IN GUARD (Continued from Page One) good. We were shown how the booby traps work and how effective they are. Next a smoke screen was laid down to show us how effective it would be to cover troop movements move-ments and last of all we were told how to detect and control inclner-ary inclner-ary bombs and they showed us how to control a fire bomb. There were about fifty fellows from Springville and Provo in attendance. at-tendance. From Springville there were, John Jay Russell, Sam Wheeler, Oran Nielson, Rondo Whiting, J. Reed Bird, David Salisbury, Sal-isbury, Tommy Oakes, Don Oller-ton, Oller-ton, Jack Wainwright, Frank Ber-rett, Ber-rett, David Friel, and myself.
