' y V 'SCOUTS OBSERVE OPENING OF FIFTH WAR LOAN Jamboree And Court Of Honor Included In Recent Scout Activities The Fifth Victory war loan drive was ushered in in an appropriate appro-priate manner by the Boy Scouts of the Springville and Mapleton district Monday night, when they built nine huge bonfires on Round Peak northeast of Springville in a V formation. Attracting attention of townspeople towns-people to the fires, was the setting off of dynamite, 50 pounds in all, in a series of five shots, representing repre-senting the Fifth Victory Loan. The fires were built in 30-gallon drums filled wtih crank case oil, and placed 30 feet apart, setting forth a huge flame which could be seen in all parts of the town. J. T. Wheeler, Freeman Bird, Spencer Mackley, Fay Jensen, Fred Averett and Frank Morgan were responsible for the exhibition assisted by various Scouts of the district. Scouts of the Kolob district also al-so conducted a jamboree and a Scout Court of Honor in connection connec-tion with an overnight camping trip at? Kellys Grove, Hobble Creek canyon, last Wednesday. Approximately Approxi-mately 125 Scouts participated. A bonfire program was held early in the evening with numbers presented from each of the seven troops in the district. A large number of awards, including several sev-eral star and life badges, were presented during the Court of Honor. Also, during the evening, Fred Averett, salvage chairman, distributed approximately $15 to each troop for their participation in the recent paper salvage drive. Mr. Tingey of the Sixth ward addressed ad-dressed the Scouts and Scouters assembled during the evening bonfire bon-fire program. The jamboree was also attended by a large group of parents and others interested in Scouting. Joseph Carnesecca Jr., who was officially commended for his ingenuity in-genuity and devotion to duty at the Naval Air Station at Norfolk, Nor-folk, Virginia. |
