Show Red Devils Play at Payson Friday in League Opener Friday night opens the league battles for teams in Nebo district and from soundings via pre-season play, the league championship has practically been cietermimnea Deiore piay opens. Most prognosticators throughout the area (with the exception of loyal Red Devil fans) are predicting predict-ing Spanish Fork and Payson to walk off with top honors in the district without undue difficulty. At Payson Friday night, the Red Devils will settle down in earnest to defend their 1953 Nebo crown after a somewhat shaky pre-season record. The Devils have just about split even, however in preliminary pre-liminary trials. The game is sched uled for 8 p.m. with the Sophomores Sopho-mores of the two schools getting in their preliminary tussle at 6:30. This year the Carbon A school is competing in the Nebo circuit with all games counting in the final standings. Carbon must show a better percentage than the fourth place team in the Big 8 league to get into the A tournament. tourna-ment. In other league encounters Friday, Fri-day, Juab's cagers will attempt to humble the high-riding Dons in a game at Spanish Fork. Tintic will see how strong the Carbon A cagers are when they host them at Eureka. Although Spanish Fork and Pay-son Pay-son are rated highly in the Nebo race this year, Coach Alma Garrett's Gar-rett's club, while not the best produced pro-duced at the high school, is capable of winning the league because of their speed and defensive ability. The Devils have looked especially good in some of their pre-season tHts and should they hit the;r stride, they should be a hard team to beat even Friday night. Devils Lose to Jordan . . . Last Friday night, Springville met the towering Jordan team and went down to defeat and in a similar manner that all opponents have done against Coach Art Hughes' giants. Jordan was somewhat some-what disturbed at the playing of the Red Devils throughout the first quarter when they could only manage man-age a 7 point advantage thanks to 6 foot 10 14 Pollard and his 8 or 10 points. The "second" stringers string-ers carried on throughout the second sec-ond quarter and after 5 minutes of the third quarter, Coach Hughes sent four of his first stringers in to shower. The final score read 61-36 for the Beetdiggers. |
