Show Returned Prisoner Was Enlistee From Springville Sgt. Howard Beadleson, whom Spanish Fork welcomed back last week as the first reelased prisoner of war from Utah, enlisted from Springville in December 1949, when he was 17 years of age. His grandmother, Mrs. Ella Edwards, Ed-wards, who has reared him since he was a -boy of three, was living in SpringviUe at the time and his grandfather died in this city shortly short-ly after he went into the service. His father died just before his birth and his mother about three years later. Howard was captured on Nev-ember Nev-ember 5, 1950, during what he described as hand-to-hand fighting. fight-ing. He was in the prison camp 33 months. The food and clothing, he said, were at first very poor but later became better. They were allowed al-lowed their own cooks. Sgt. .Beadleson .Bead-leson was in charge of the music recreation for his company. He received very few letters from his home, the first one being about three months old. He reported report-ed that he heard about the armistice armis-tice being signed about three hours after the signing. Sgt. Beadleson said he would not soon forget his buddies who would never come back. He has received most of his back pay for the time he was in the prison camp, he stated, and he is still in the army, having to report to Camp Stoneman, Calif., Sept. 22. |
