Show "EASY DOES IT . . . rpO HELP PREVENT bad discoloration dis-coloration of bruises on arms and legs, there are several easy remedies. One which helps is to rub the bruised part with starch moistened in cold water. Another is to rub the part with a small amount of lard or butter immediately. immedi-ately. To relieve the eyes when they're inflamed or irritated, bathe with sterile cotton balls in a solution of boric acid and boiled water which has been cooled. An eye cup may also be used for this application. A pinch of moistened baking soda applied to insect bites will stop their itching and smarting. Damp- ened salt may also be used to relieve re-lieve the pain of insect bites. For bee stings, bathe the affected parts in equal amounts of water and ammonia. If this is not available, avail-able, use a paste made of baking soda, salt and water for the sting, RECIPE OF THE WEEK Deluxe Baked Beans (Serves 4) 1 16-ounce can pork and beans 2 tablespoons brown sugar teaspoon dry mustard cup catsup 2 slices bacon, cut in 1-inch pieces Combine all ingredients. Bake covered ini a greased 1-quart 1-quart casserole in a moderate (350F.) oven for 20 minutes. Uncover and continue baking for another 20 minutes. or a frequent application of hydrogen hydro-gen peroxide. If you've been . stung by a poisonous insect, squeeze out all the poison in the wound, then cover with olive oil and powdered chalk mixed to a creamy consistency. To bring prompt relief to wasp stings, apply ammonia to the sting, or a solution of washing soda and water. Several applications of either of these help relieve the pain. When you go on a picnic or a hike, it's a good idea to apply vinegar and water to parts which will be exposed to insects as this retards their biting. Oil of citronella I (lemon oil) or oil of geranium will also prevent many insects bite when applied to the skin. |
