Show Mapleton Boasts New Industry in Hjorth Brothers fabricating Plant The Hjorth Brothers of Mapleton are firm believers be-lievers in the eld adage that, "from little acorns, big-oaks big-oaks grow." iuddnsf from the business they are build- ing at Mapleton, from a very small beginning. It was back in 1945, '46 and '47, that Hugh Hjorth, the eldest of the two brothers was working at Geneva for the Mid-West Pipe Company and learned the fundamentals funda-mentals and got some ideas for what is now becoming a major business. Later, when Carlos came home from the Navy, a. partnership was formed and this partnership has developed a fabricating shop which is comparatively new in these parts. In words of the layman, unfamiliar un-familiar with the terms connected with the business, the fabricating shop simply bends big pipe in all kinds of shapes and angles. The shop and working .area, which is located near the Hjorth home an former Lovell Mendenhall property at Mapleton, covers about 65 feet' by 75 feet. Already work has beecn done for Geneva Steel, the Standard Oil Refinery of Salt Lake City, Bechtel Corp.. of San Francisco; Fluor Corp., Los Angeles; An-geles; Stern Rogers of Denver and others. The process of bending 144-inch pipe without its collapsing ha been worked out by the Hjorth Brothers over a period of the past few years. The pipe is first stood on end and filled with sand vibrated vibra-ted in solid with an air hammer. It is then placed in a huge brick oven measuring about 3 feet in width and 20 feet long and it is heated red hot. Then it is taken from the furnace ovens and clamped clamp-ed down on the bending floor. With the use of a cable winch, the pipe ing is bent into the desired shape or degree. Fourteen-inch pipe measuring mea-suring 24 to 26 feet in length can bo handled by this process although al-though most pipe come in lengths of 18 to 25 feet. Three other workmen are employed em-ployed by the Hjorth Brothers for regular work but when orders war-rent, war-rent, a larger force is hired. One or two similar shops ar? located lo-cated on the ccast, some are located lo-cated in the Texas oil fields and there are others in Chicago and (Continued on page Twelve) Mapleton Boasts New Industry Plant Continued from Page One. some in the eastern states, but the fabricating shop now operated by Hugh and Carlos Hjorth at Manle-ton Manle-ton is the only one of its kind in Utah or in several other western states. With new orders coming in regularly, to this shc-p, there is no telling to what proportions it might develop, but at any rate, it is a. new industry for this area and the owners and managers are to be congratulated. |
