Show "SHIPMATES FOREVER" IS RIVOLI FILM SUNDAY- MONDAY -TUESDAY Warner Bros, gave talking pictures pic-tures to the screen. They also discovered that the United States government and its various departments de-partments furnished the background back-ground for stores of human interest in-terest far excelling fanciful adventures ad-ventures in mythological lands. That they were correct has been proved by the remarkable success of its various service stories "Here Comes the-Navy" was the first; then life at West Point was dramatized in "Flirtation Walk." The marines had their hour in "Devil Dogs of the Air." Now comes the story of Annapolis Ann-apolis in the Cosmopolitan production produc-tion "Shipmates Forever," with Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler in the stellar roles. This is a sweeping panoramic film, packed with thrills, romance and infectious song. The life of the naval cadet is presented in all its vivid coloring. "Shipmates Forever" is the most romantic as well as the most thrilling nf the service Dictures. Never has Powell been given such an opportunity to prove his versatility before the screen as in this picture. Not only does he sing many catchy airs in his inimitable in-imitable manner, but his part calls for real, dramatic action to which he rises with genuine artistry. Dick is heard in three specially written songs for the production one a rousing march time air, "Don't Give Up the Ship," that bids fair to become one of the popular hits of the season. Ruby Keeler was never more winsome and charming than as the orphaned officer's daughter, who fights to keep Dick up to his metal as a student officer of the navy and the traditions she loves. Miss Keeler also gives an exhibition exhibi-tion of her dancing, which falls naturally into the plot. There is a strong supporting cast headed by Lewis Stone, who plays the role of Dick's father. His work is polished, sincere and talented. tal-ented. Others who give exception-1 al performances are Ross Alexander, Alexan-der, John Arledge, Eddie Acuf f and Robert Light, as Dick's classmates; class-mates; Richard (Dick) Foran an upper classman; Joseph Crehan Martha Merrill and Mary Treen. |
