Show Utah Power Buys 175,000 Tons Of Coal The Utah Power & LI'ght company com-pany in 1937, with the purchase of 175.317 tons of coal in Utah, was one of the largest coal consumers con-sumers in the intermountain area, G. L. Ellerback, Provo division manager of the company, announced an-nounced today. He' said the company used approximately ap-proximately 6 per cent of the three million tons of this fuel mined in the state last year, mainly main-ly to feed its big- steam generating plants at Provo and Salt Lake. "On the basis that it takes one man one day to handle a ton of coal from the mine to the market, the estimated labor for fulfilling the requirements of the company last year amounted to 1,200.000 man hours," Mr. Ellerbeck asserted. assert-ed. "This makes the electric utility util-ity a real contributing factor to the stabiliation of em-ployment and provides a steady i'neome for Utah mines and railroads and bigger big-ger payrolls for Utah coal miners and railroad workers." In 1937 the power company and its affiliated companies expended approximately $4,250,000 in their territory for payroll, materials, and supplies. This huge expenditure not only provide livelihood for the company's com-pany's 2.240 employees but the purchase of local materials contributes con-tributes substantially to the support sup-port of many other local industries indus-tries and keep their labor employed. em-ployed. In addition, the company expends another million dollars annually' an-nually' for materials and supplies which are not manufacturer in Utah but which aid in maintaining representatives and employes of outside concerns in the state. |
