Show Merrill Harris Wins Merchants J Contest Merrill Harris won first place in the merchants' art essay contest on the theme, "How We Can Best Develop Springville," in the senior department of the high school. Second place in the senior section went to Amy Jones. In the junior division, first place went to Erma Celventra, and second place to Mar.jorie Straw. Following is Mr. Harris' essay : Springville, a city of about four'' thousand people, with a moderate climate, having its own power plant and water works, and situated situ-ated in the heart of the stale should be one of the most beautiful and progressive cities in the state and in the west. It has its own plants, factories and aiso plenty of water to irrigate and to make the lands produce. , The best and most effective way of beautifying our city and making it better is by examining the needs and by looking into the problems that we must meet. After all this has been done a program should be prepared by which wo could amend all the bad places. The city should be zoned into plats bo that we 1 could distinguish one place from another. Chicken coops, barns, corrals, cor-rals, and such things should be prohibited pro-hibited in the business section and the thickly populated places and the civic center's and the places of residence. All public places as the park, and school grounds, library and other public places should be beautified by planting lawn, trees, and shrubbery. It should also be done along the sidewalks - and streets and in our yards. We couiJ. have people who have studied these ways of beautifying public places, to supervise the planting and to show them the best ways and the most beautiful. We need to get behind the art i movement and boost it better than we have ever done it before. The art is one of the best things a city has ever taken upon its shoulders jyto put over and the gallery in our city is one of the best in the United States. More good comes to this ; community through the art than I will ever be estimated. This work is being put over most successfully and if we keep it up it will aid the whole community just as much as it does now. Our organizations in ' the school are very good the band, ; glee clubs, Ag club, type teams, social clubs and athletics all go to make a good and progressive city. Our merchants need our help so that they may enlarge their business busi-ness and serve us in a better way. So to help our city industrially and 1'mancially we should foster home industries. In doing this we must trade at home. Giving our merchants merch-ants trade means service to us for it comes back to us in the form of .' lower prices, better service and other- things. Our home industries are many and vc should stand behind be-hind them and help them to become ' famous. We should encourage new i industries and should go out of our J way to get them and help them to i get stai'ted for it all goes" to make : a good fr iendly community. We should stand behind our mayor and council for they are the governing pwer-to the city. No city will" last if it does not have laws and if they are not obeyed. ' - If we increase our industries and keep the older ones going that are centered in and around Springville and keep the art speeding on its course, we will be doing something that will make other cities sit up and take notice and also make our city the most desirable place to live in the state. |
