Asked for a statement in regard to the recove ry p rogram, Smoot requested specially that he not Iju quoted in any wuy beyond a simple statement that "we must all do our part to aid business in getting on u normal basis." An elderly, tall and slender man, ! Smoot said he expected to devote the "rest of my life to church work. There is much to be done. My life in Washington was. interesting, but tension there was severe. I will not enter public life again unless my country needs me in an emergency." Smoot has changed greatly since the campaign of 1932 when a Democratic Demo-cratic landslide skept him out of the office he had held so long. Ht. was defeated 'by Elbert Thomas, u youthful university professor with liberal leanings, in contrast to Smoot's conservatism. During the campaign he was nervous, abrupt at times and never appeared relaxed. Now, with church duties only to claim Ids time, he is approachable, friendly, calm and unhurried.
