Show S. F. Deer Hunters Bring Back Bear SPANISH FORK Barney Newitt and his brother Gifford Newitt, the latter of Bingham, went hunting deer Sunday morning. morn-ing. They chose the mountains near the Springville crossing Diamond Fork canyon. Separating in order to cover more territory, Barney ran into a mother bear and her yearling cub. He fired at the cub, bringing him down after several shots when the mother bear started after the hunter. He fired his last shot at the mother, succeeding in wounding her, then called loudly for the help of his brother who was not far away. Gifford seeing the enraged animal pursuing the younger man, took aim and placed a bullet between bruin's eyes, killing kill-ing her instantly. The men brought the body of the cub into town but the mother bear which must have weighed about 400 pounds, they could not bring, but skinned her and left the carcass in the hills. The young men let a companion com-panion carry their guns while they were bringing in their kill and ran fairly into several fine buck deer. |
