Show Two States Battle For Tiny Island i ILWACO. Wash., Aug. 22. An island slid across a river and some day. Washington authorities said totir.y. the U. S. supremo court will be called on to decide whether it belongs to Washington or Oregon The land is Sand island on the ! lower Columbia river. Originally beyond doubt, it was in Oregon's territory. Then jetties were constructed in the river and the swirl of the current cur-rent changed. The island started to migrate to Washington. Normally the center of any stream diving two states is considered consid-ered the interstate line. The islam moved completely from one side of the river to the other, and in so doing do-ing increased in size many times. Oregon continues to issue licenses for fishing on the island and the federal government gets the lease rights. Washingtonians contend the Island Is-land has invaded their territory, and belongs to them, with whatever resources re-sources accrue First maps of that section were prepared in the early 50's of the past century. They show Sand Island Is-land but a speck on what is now the Oregon side of the stream. Later maps recorded the progress of th island across the broad river until it is just off Baker's Bay, Wash., and the channel separating it from this state is so shallow that vow-boats vow-boats have difficulty crossing the sand bars. |
