Show WILL STUDY FISH MBIT; 3.000 Trout To lie Planted In Latest Experiment By i U. S. Bureau. I By J. II. Paulson After the fish in Strawberry reservoir get accustomed to their new license plates maybe they'll fix up a set of traffic laws to take effect on June lirst. For by j that time, 5()i)0 native trout in the reservoir will be used to wearing ! a tag on t'neir gill cover. j Perhaps fish cowboys will come j into prominence in the Rocky ! Mountain territoiy if the fish-tagging becomes widespread. C. M. Feast and Karl Bunnell, Provo, of the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries, Salt Lake office, will put number tags on 5000 trout in the Strawberry i reservoir and adjoining streams-the streams-the latter, part of May. Expect Valuable Data The metal tags are much like the tags placed on the ears of cattle only smaller. The half-inch tags, which will be numbered consecutively con-secutively from 1 to 5000 will be placed on six-inch fish. The purpose of the tagging of these fish is to get accurate information in-formation on the growth, migration, migra-tion, percentage of survival and the best places to plant fish. The fisli will be set out in four equal allotments in these four points: in the deep water of the lake; in the shallow water of the late; in the headwaters of the tributary trib-utary streams, and in the streams near the lake. Then when the fish are caught by the sportsmen the size, number and the place where the fish is caught will be noted. From this the fishery department de-partment will get data which is expected ex-pected to the invaluable in propo-gating propo-gating the different fish which are proving so popular to sportsmen in Uta'n. Considerable difference of opinion opin-ion has arisen concerning the proper prop-er means and places of planting fish, and the results of the tagging, tag-ging, because the approximate rate of growth of fish will be told. Fisherman John McDoe, to use a fanciful example, casts his line out nigger fashion on the north sliore of the lake. After a few minutes he is fortunate enough to get a bite, and a few moments later is ever more fortunate in landing a fish. Feverishly, lie bends down and marks on his notebook: "Fish number 3823; caught on Ihe north shoie of Strawberry reservoir; size 14 inches; complexion fair-eyes fair-eyes blue; strawberry mark on left shoulder. Answers to the name of "Hattie." The bureau of fisheries will continue con-tinue to check up on the fish as long as any reports are sent in from the various camps and l'isn-ing l'isn-ing places. Fishermen take out a set of fish from the lake as soon as they make a sizable growth so a rather accurate check on the entire en-tire plant will be obtained. The project is being undertaken under the diiection of Dr. A. S. Hazzard and Fied J. Foster, supervisor, both j of the Salt Lake office of the U.S. ' bureau of fisheries. |
