The senators, members of the senate irrigation and reclamation committee, included Thomas, Idaho, Ida-ho, chairman; Oddie, Nevada; Howell, Nebraska; Kendrick and Carey, Wyoming; Ashhurst, Arizona, Ari-zona, and Dill, Washington. All-Day Hearing? They conducted an all-day hearing hear-ing on the protests, which were presented by Senator Oddie. Rep. Samuel S. Arentz, Nevada, sat with the committee. Senator Oddie uttered a strong protest against the issuance of sr rip by the Six Companies, build-i:i build-i:i s of the dam, in part payment of employes. "This practice should be stopped as un-American. It is a thoroughly thorough-ly bad practice," he said. Senator Oddie also alleged that acting Secretary Sec-retary of the Interior Dixon had shown "misinformation and maladministration" mal-administration" in his answer to Senator Oddie's complaint to Secretary Sec-retary Wilbur. Senator Ashurst, Arizona, denounced de-nounced the scrip policy as "infa- mous." Representatives of labor organizations organ-izations appeared before the committee, com-mittee, alleging that wages, working work-ing conditions and costs of living were unsatisfactory. Bishop Gibson Thomas, Nevada, protested against payments offered settlers in districts to be inundated inun-dated by the dam as "unfair and unequal." Following the hearing here, the committee adjourned to Boulder City, where protests of independent independ-ent merchants against the scrip policy were heard. It was explained that the scrip system, consists of giving the workers work-ers scrip cashable at company stores, instead of money. The flesh of the ostrich is palatable. |
