Show When Will Industry Awaken? Two interesting ideas for increasing employment have appeared lately. The Wall Street Journal of all papers ! publicizes the idea that a 35-hour week would give employment to everyone. every-one. Congressman Fred Britten of Illinois introduces a bill to make Saturday a legal holiday. He figures this would give employment to 4,000,000 persons. The Britten idea, of course, is hopeless. Sunday is a legal holiday today, and millions work just the same. You could make all the days legal holidays, for that matter, and it would make no difference whatever. But a general shortening of hours WOULD help. - It would not only put people to work, but it would make profits for -Industry. Industry fought the eight-hour day for years and discovered, dis-covered, after labor had obtained it that more work was accomplished and more people had more money to spend than before. We never saw, in the day of 12-hour days and seven-day weeks, anything to compare with the prosperity that came with the inauguration of shorter hours.' Shorter hours, more work. More work, more money floating around. More spenders, better business. Better ; business, more profits. j -Industry ought to see that and act on it. |
