J., March 9 (U.R) The tensest expectancy expect-ancy colored with hope prevailed here today in the Baby Lindbergh kidnapine. Activities of the past 24 hours i pointed a genuine optimism for return of Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr., to his parents. Col. Henry Breckinridge, adviser to Col. Lindbergh, has been engaged on secret missions which led to this new flame of hope, despite the fact that, so far as public announcement an-nouncement is "concerned, no tangible word of the baby's whereabouts has been received. Progress Is Reported "Progress" is being made toward restoration of the child, who was seized last week (Tuesday night) from his crib in the Lindbergh nursery. That much is official. The rest is largely rumor and conjecture, but there was no mistaking today the undercurrent of hope' that stirred within the confines of the Sourland Mountain estate of the Lindberghs. Rumor, unconfirmed but not denied, had it that- the baby would be taken to Englewood, N. J., when and if he is returned. The estate of his grandmother, Mrs. Dwight Morrow, Mor-row, is ready, and that was the baby's regular home except for the week-end sojourns here. '- TRENTON, MarcVi 9 (IIE1 Engle- wood, N. J., was rumored today to be the site selected for taking Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr., when and if his kldnepars deliver him. The rumor lacked confirmation, but it was deemed logical that the child might be surrendered there, inasmuch as that was his customary custom-ary home the estate of his grandmother grand-mother Mrs. Dwight Morrow. State police, asked concerning various rumors of impending de-i livery, replied through the medium of the forenoon press conference today that they "Knew nothing of this prior to your question." Police Force Reduced The situation in the kidnaping mystery was reported unchanged from the earlier press conference, but from that had come the significant signifi-cant word that "progress" is being be-ing made the first time the police, through their contacts at the Lindbergh Lind-bergh home had made such an optimistic op-timistic observation. The press conference also developed de-veloped that the original personnel of state troopers "In and about the Lindbergh home" had been re-iuced re-iuced about half. Meantime, Col. Lindbergh Is taking almost sole direction di-rection of the effort to achieve return re-turn of the child. He has the assistance as-sistance of his family, his adviser, Col. Henry Breckenridge, and two "go betweens" appointed to contact con-tact the underworld. |
