Show Forgetting It: A Good Sign One hopeful sign of the times is that people seem to be forgetting the depression; you read fewer depression jokes; see the world slowly turn away from the past and become interested in the future. Of course, the wounds of the panic will be long in healing; heal-ing; millions still suffer, and will continue to do so for heaven knows how long. But millions more, on the other hand, have recovered confidence in America, and in themselves. You hear about plans for the future; a few weeks ago, all you heard was defeat and despair. Confidence, of course, is the key to progress; Without it, there just isn't any. It is the confident man who lets go of his dollars in the hope of getting them back, with interest. The unconfident man simply hangs on to what he has. Probably, we shall forget the depression very rapidly. Our minds are geared to remember pleasant things, erase grief. Otherwise, we'd go crazy. Our present wave of growing confidence is not mythical; it has definite facts to back it; black-and-white figures to prove it is not misplaced. Rarely has a national state of mind changed so rapidly for the better. It is unsafe to predict much, but chances are that our most optimistic hopes will be exceeded in the next few years. We are going to climb to the heights but just how far depends on our common sense and ability to retain our confidence in our country. |
