Show July Fourth Celebration Draws Throngs to City; Parade Is Huge Success The Third ward float, representing represent-ing George Washington and his men crossing' the Delaware river, was awarded first prize of $25, in the July 4 parade in Springvillc Monday afternoon. The float, beautiful and unique in design, consisted of a large white satin covered row boat with General Washington and his men dressed in the traditional white satin trousers, dark coat and white wig. Second place in the. parade went to the First ward with a prize of $10, and third place to the Mother's Study club with a $5 prize. The latter two floats were pretty pret-ty creations, the first representing Utah in decorative designs of sego lilies and the Beehive, while the other presented a huge basket of flowers. Many floats carried out in artistic ar-tistic manner, the bi-centennial of George Washington, including those of the Kiwanis club, Alpha Beta club, Red and White stores, City Drug, R. L. Jex and Kolob Lumber company. A cleverly arranged float, entered enter-ed by the J. O. Reynolds store added add-ed a comic note to the parade by depicting prosperity returning in the form of a huge giant. Others worthy of favorable comment were entered by John I. Holley, the Sec-and Sec-and ward, American Legion, the Auxiliary, the Fourth ward. Snel-son Snel-son Drug, J. C. Penney, Spring-ville Spring-ville bank, Hedquist Drug, Utah Poultry, Springville Bakery and O. P. Skaggs The American Legion color bearers bear-ers led the procession, followed by the boys drum corps which drew favorable comment from the hundreds hun-dreds of people who lined both sides of Main street. Next in-line came the city council, Kql&b stake presidency, and Gold Star m'others. The patriotic program'' held "in the forenoon, -with Judge Joseph Nelson as speaker, ;was well attended. at-tended. The children enjoyed a program of sports at the park at this time. The rodeo at the ball park in the afternoon drew a capacity crowd many attending from surrounding surround-ing communities. Again in the evening eve-ning the park was crowded during the illuminated parade and fireworks fire-works exhibition. As a fitting climax to the day's celebration was the grand opening of the new solders memorial hall. The dance marking this event, was a big success socially and financially. |
