Show S HOPE TD BETTED OLD TIME Make Up Time Lost In Fogs Around New Foundland. By HAROLD A. PETERS Cnited Press Staff Correspondent BERLIN, July 6 (U.R) James Mattern and Bennett Griffin, dashing over land and sea in a spectacular race around the world to beat the Post-Gatty record, landed at Tempelhof airdrome, at 5:42 p. m. (11:42 a. m. E.S.T.) today, to-day, already ahead of the Post-Gatty Post-Gatty time. They reached Berlin 31 hours and 41 minutes after leaving New York and 18 hours and 40 minutes after leaving Harbor Grace. Cover 4100 Miles The Post-Gatty time to Berlin was 34 hours and 34 minutes. Thus Mattern and Griffin had made up the time they lost while wandering in the fog over New Foundland yesterday. Since leaving New York at 4:01 a. m., E.S.T., yesterday, Mattern 1 and Griffin had covered approximately approxi-mately 4,100 miles, including 1,150 from New York to Harbor Grace, and 2,950 without a stop from Harbor Har-bor Grace to Berlin Where they gained time was by not stopping after leaving Harbor Grace, whereas where-as Post and Gatty refueled at Chester, England, and Hannover, Germany. Mattern and Griffin also al-so paused a shorter time at Harboi Grace. The Century of Progress made a new time record for crossing the Atlantic. They were sighted over Ireland this morning, then over England and Germany, flying at high speed. Their arrival had been nervously nervous-ly awaited, since they should have been here more than an hour earlier, earl-ier, judging from the time they passed over Hannover, 160 miles away. The giant Lufthansa G-38 was sent out from Hannover half an hour after they passed and landed here to report having seen no sign of them. Thunderstorms prevailed between Hannover and Berlin, but not serious ser-ious enough to cause the fliers real difficulty. |
