Show 5on Carlos Johnson I In the passing of Don C. Johnson Springville parts with a man whose life was dedicated to the welfare of his loved ones and his fcllowmcn to the building of a greater commonwealth. During his long Jife here he faced many vicissitudes vicissi-tudes incident to pioneer life, and to bringing about better bet-ter living conditions for himself and his fellowmen. No sacrifice seemed too great for him to make in the early days when the sturdy manhood of every Utah community was enlisted in combatting the onslaughts of the Redman, and in other tedious tasks that called for stamina and hard work. In his declining years it gave him much pleasure to reflect on those trying times and compare them with the life of luxury most people live today. Through it all Don Carlos Johnson played the part of a true gent'lem'an. , Through it all a supreme love of truth, a lofty and generous patriotism, a forgetfulness of self, moral courage, cour-age, personal fearlessness, absolute sincerity characterized character-ized his life. These, with an intense love of humanity, constituted the basis of his character, which will ever be resplendent in that galaxy of pioneers whose deeds will ever stand as a monument in the early history of this state. Having passed that milestone in life where ambition ambi-tion spurs one on to greater accomplishments, he felt that bis life's work was complete, and oftentimes he was heard to say that he was ready to meet his Maker, and that if he could but pass peacefully nothing would be sweeter to him. Age had made mellow his soul. He was truly prepared pre-pared to meet his Maker, and so we should not mourn. And yet those near and dear to him cannot but feel a void in their lives, for his keen intellect and his profound pro-found wisdom will be missed. Truly, indeed, may it be said in the immortal words of Shakespeare so familiar to our departed friend : His life was gentle, and the elements 1 So mix'd in him, that Nature might stand up f And say to all the world, "This was a man." 5 |
