Hopkins, Driver, la Detained In County Jail. j Bertha Elizabeth Howe, IS, "; was killed and Mrs. Bessie Diamond Gill, IS, both of Springville, were rendered unconscious when a car driven driv-en by A. C. Hopkins, 991 West Sixth South street, Tro-vo, Tro-vo, turned over at 1 :30 o'clock y this morning at the mouth of Span- ish Fork canyon. j Mrs. Gill suffered severe shock : i and deep cuts and bruises about ! the head and body. She regained , consciousness several hours later : i it a Spanish Fork hospital, and Is j now expected to recover. ,; j Hopkins escaped with minor !. . scratches. He is being held in the Utah county jail pending an inves- (' titration of the circumstances sur- f. rounding the accident. j; Ret 11 riling From Da nee j ' The dead girl is the daughter of Isaac and Alice Savage Howe of i Springville. Her father is employ- ,' jd at the Columbia Steel company.. The party was returning from a : dance at Castilla on the way to ' Springville, when the accident 1 happened, according to Sheriff K. 1 G. Durnell, and Deputy Sheriff J. P. Gourlcy, who investigated the ! accident. At a point where the road forks, Hopkins attempted to swini; the car into the left hnnd road L leading to Spanish Fork. The machine ma-chine skidded in the loose gravel and finally crashed into a guard rail at the side of the road and turned over on its side. j' It is believed that Miss Howe sustained deep cuts In the hack of " her head from the broken glas.T ;) when she was thrown against thi ! windshield, causing instant death. i Taken To Hospital The occupants of the car wore brought to the Hughes hospital al J Spanish Fork by Milton Perry and Fred Spiker of Thistle. They told ' the officers Miss Howe was apparently appar-ently dead when they reached her j, side. 1 Bertha Howet was born in Salt Lake, June 16, 1913. The family i came to Springville about sev;'n years ago, when Mr. Howe gained employment with the Columbia Slcel company. Reside the pa r-ents, r-ents, she is survived by three brot hers, Larncy. Wood row and Francis K.; two Pinters, Mm. Kllnn Barnott. and Lois Howe, all of Springville. |
