Show County Peace Officers Interfere With Plans of 200 Cockfight Fans More than 200 enthusiastic sport fan breathlessly awaited the completion com-pletion of the preparation for a comprehensive cockfight in the sahdhills about a mile west of the Lincoln, high" school were sadly dis-aiiointod dis-aiiointod Sunday- forenoon when Sheriff J. T). Boyd and Deputies Otto Birk and George Davis arrived ar-rived on the scenq as self-invited guests. The appearance of the officqrs had the tendency to scatter tho crowd in every direction, although some were too frightened, to move and remained to talk matters over wth the sheriff. It was to have been a big affair. Sportsmen from Trovov Salt Lake, Ogden and even as far away as Preston, Pres-ton, Ida. Were among those who had come to witness the fights. There were men from every walk in life, including doctors, businessmen, tradesmen, restauratens, fanners professional athletes and clerks. Fifty or more roosters of tho fighting variety added atmosphere to tho surroundings by staging a continuous crowing contest as a preliminary pre-liminary to the would-be agility test. The roosters were carried in different kinds of containers, such aa lKxes, sacks and suit caws. The largest consignment of the fighting birds came from Salt Lake City in a large truck. It was the persistent crowing of the roasters in this truck while on the state highway that lead officers to the rendezvous of the game fans away from the beaten beat-en paths of traffic. When the Officers arrived on the scene the fighting pit was just nbout completed. One of the Provo fans, recognizing Deputy' Sheriff George DuvIh who was the first of the office of-fice cs to get into the crowd, mournfully mourn-fully rold two or three of the fans who were leveling the ground for the pit to cease operations as the fun was all off. - ' Another fan on swing Sheriff Boyd' coining towards the pit, emptied a bottle of nioonshino to drown his disappointment and then threw away the empty bottle. It, is the opinion of Sheriff Boyd that had the fights gone on without interference interfer-ence from the officers there no doubt would have been several fights among the fans also. It is understood that previous attempted at-tempted cockfights attended by practically the same fans had lieen broken, up several weeks ago in Salt Lake and Weber counties. The Provo fight was at first scheduled to bo held In an old barn near Utah hike straight west of Sixth South street, hut was changed to the other locution early Sunday morning. Preparation?! Pre-paration?! for the cockfight were made on the Cox farm owned by a former Provo policeman, who, however, how-ever, knew nothing concerning tlie uffaJr until after the arrival of tin officers. As no fight had started when the officers arrived, no arrests were made. Sheriff Boyd remained on the scene until uHer all of the fans hail departed with their fighting hirUa. i |
