Show PITCHERS' WAR ENDS IN FAVOR OF FIRST WARD League Standing ! Team W. L. PC First Ward 6 1 .857 Third Ward 4 2 .667 Mapleton 3 4 .429 Second 1 5 .167 The Springville First ward of the American Legion junior baseball base-ball league triumphed again over the Third ward when Captain Weight's husky warriors took the long end of a 3 to 1 score. This however, was no walk-away for the First ward bunch, since the score was 1 to 1 at the end of the game, an extra inning being necessary to close the argument. The game was played at the Jefferson school grounds last Saturday evening. It was a pitcher's battle betweo Spafford of the Third and Capt. Weight. Both boys handled themselves them-selves in splendid style, and were not relieved until the seventh canto when Best took the mound for Weight and Kirkham relieved Spafford. Spaf-ford. The latter, however, did not enter until the First ward boys had made the circle twice successfully. The fielding in Saturday's game was exceptionally good, only two errors on the part of Third warders occurring which, proved costly to them. With the result of last Saturday's game favoring the First ward it is nof likely that they will lose the championship honors. This could only happen by the Second ward winning next Saturday's game and Mapleton winning the game of July 24, in which event First and Third ward would tie for first place, which is not considered likely. This means that the First ward will be given an opportunity to enter the state finals if Springville is among the towns to participate in the finals, according to R. B. Maughn, chairman of the baseball committee of the Springville post, American Legion, under whose auspices aus-pices the junior league is fostered. |
