Show MEMBERS OF " MOBWOUNDED Florida Sheriff Defends Jail When Mob Storms Place; Man Who Slew Four Was Object of Fierce Attack TAMPA. Fla., May 31 (UP) Eight men were wounded, two seriously, ser-iously, when a mob of 600 stormed the Hillsborough county jail early today seeking B. F. Levins, self-confessed slayer of a father and three children. At dawn the mob was reported to have dwindled away after a succession suc-cession of volleys from the barricaded barri-caded force of the sheriff. Ambulances removed the wounded wound-ed shortly before daybreak. Seriously Wounded The most seriously wounded were: Steve Barcena, Tampa, wounded in the stomach, condition serious. Vul Davidson, Mackinaw, III., wounded in side, condition serious. What remained of the mob nt 4 a. in. was apparently well satisfied that Levins was not in the jail. A committee of invaders was allowed to search the building at the suggestion sug-gestion of Sheriff J. E. Jou.es. A crowd started gathering before (he jail doors at midnight. Soon it bad grown to a mob of GOO, which gathered courage with its increasing numbers. Sheriff Jones" and a handful of keepers barricaded themselves inside, in-side, and refused to surrender the jail. Battering Ram Csed Suddenly a truck pulled up before the building, street lights were smashed and a large timber was unloaded. The timber was put to use us a battering ram against the brick wall of the jail. Shortly a hole large enough for a man to crawl through had been battered in the trail. . Deputies inside in-side fired a volley from the aperture, aper-ture, according to witnesses, and eight men fell wounded. The moli then moved out of rantre. dragging the injured across the street. Levins confessed last week to the slaying of Ilermnu Merrell, carpenter, carpen-ter, and Merrell's three children, according to authorities. Mrs. Merrell Mer-rell and iier throe-months-old child were severely beaten. |
