Show NEW UNIT TO BE ADDED TO STEEL PLANT AT EARLY DATE Pittsburgh Firm Is Awarded Construction Work; New Battery of Ovens Will Be Ready This Fall, Officials State With the awarding of the contract for the construction of an additional battery of fby-product coke ovens at the Columbia Colum-bia Steel corporation's plant here to the Koppers company of Pittsburgh, Pa., another $1,000,000 will be expended at the local plant within the next few months, according to nnnnnnrpmpnt nf fnmnnnv rtffiriflls . . Excavation Work Excavation work for the foundation foun-dation is already under way, and ; (he construction of the new ovens is to be commenced immediately in order that they may be ready for operation this fall, it is stated. The contract calls for the construction con-struction of twenty-three new byproduct by-product ovens with a capacity of approximately Mod tons of coke a day. The original installation was thirty-three ovens with a daily output out-put of about, 5(K) tons. With the completion of the new battery the Provo plant will have a daily coke production capacity of approximately approxi-mately S50 tons, which will require about 1700 tons of coal daily. Ths coal will- be obtained from the mines of the Columbia Steel corporation at Columbia, in Carbon county. The present daily production capacity at Columbia is about 1000 tons a dayand some development at the mine will be necessary to care tor the increased demand occasioned by the new coke ovens. Addition Is Necessary The addition to the .local coke plant was made necessary by contracts con-tracts recently obtained by the Columbia Co-lumbia Steel corporation with International In-ternational and United States Smelting Smelt-ing companies. The demands of these two concerns aggregate about 800 tons a day. Practically the entire en-tire coke output of the present p'ant is required by the Columbia Steel in its blast furnace operations here. |
