Show Sand Storm Delays Feminine Air Race El Paso-Midland Lap Delayed; Mrs. Thaden Still Leads; Amelia Earhart Wins Douglas-El Paso Lap. EL PASO, Tex., Aug. 21. fC.P) Resumption of the women's air derby of the national air races was postponed here today. The postponement was forced by a sand storm. Midland Next Stop Swirling black clouds of sand descended on the airport just as the women contestants had their planes lined up for a takeoff to Midland, Texas, which was to have been tonight's stop. Major A. D. Surles of the Fort Bliss army post, who was in charge of the arrangements here, ordered the postponement, indicating indicat-ing the flight could not possibly be resumed until tomorrow. The contestants flew here today from Douglas, Ariz. The lead in elapsed time was retained by Mrs. Louis McPhetridge Thaden of Pittsburgh, Pitts-burgh, in the hf.ivy division, and Phoebe Omlie of Memphis in th? light plant class. Amelie Earhart won today's lap in time of one hour and 48 minutes. Thea Rasche, German avlatrix, still was held at Phoenix, Ariz., by machine trouble, but hoped to resume re-sume the race later. Bad luck which has dogged tho fliers since their start at Santa Monira continued today when Gladys ODonnell, Long Beach, Calif., contestant, received a telegram tele-gram here telling of the death of a close friend. Refuses to Give Name Mis. O'Donnell, who is second in elapse;! time, broke into tears and locking herself in the airport office refused to give the name of tho friend.
