Show Navyman phones parents after boat accident A Springville navyman, Ronald Ron-ald Mason, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Mason, 329 South 800 East, rescued from a capsized cap-sized navy launch in Long Island Is-land Sound last Friday, told his mother over the phone, it was no less than a miracle, his life was saved and he had thanked the Lord many times since. ; He was one of 21 sailors returning re-turning in the launch to their ship after a leave ashore, when the boat tipped over during a terrific wind. Fifteen men clung to the fiberglass launch for two hours . before they drifted ashore. Three managed to swim to their boat while two others were picked up by another launch. One man presumably pre-sumably lost his life. The Navy ship, a destroyer, converted for anti-submarine helicopter operations, was 1250 yards off shore at Port Jefferson, Jeffer-son, N. Y., when the accident OGCured. In the navyman's call to his parents, he said he had been sick since the accident, suffering, suffer-ing, they believed from fatigue and shock, but he reported he had swallowed much ocean water. At any rate the parents were happy to get the phone call from him and to learn he was safe. |
