" COMMENT BY KEN METCALF Playing It Safe One of the complaints you'll often hear about television is that there's a certain sameness to the pro- wftmvm grams. If ' 1 situation com- L'' I edy is a hit, j- , first thingK I you know ten II s I other come- mn W 1 dies just like 4 ' 4 1 it have been 1 s N , scheduled. -f - The same is ' , " 's true of de- ir s tective shows I '1 and also ot westerns. We suspect that this repetition of a successful formula formu-la doesn't mean that there's a dearth of creative talent in the industry. It's just that, if someone some-one came up with a great new idea, something that had never been done before, it wouldn't get off the ground. Viewers would never have a chance to judge it, because no one would take a chance on doing something that hadn't been done before. There is much to be said for "playing it safe." Taking risks unnecessarily can be a vice, too. But it's well to remember that nothing truly original, truly creative, crea-tive, truly great, ever came about by playing it safe. The great strides in human history have been made when someone had the courage to gamble, and' to strike out on his own.
