Football opens for keeps in the Region Five play this Fri-day night and the Springville Red Devils will be hosting the Carbon Team at the North Park. Kickoff time is 7:30. Carbon generally fields a good, hard fighting aggregation and this year's team will like-ly be no exception. The Dtnos have won and lost in presea-son games and are to be rated on a par with the Devils. Coach Carol Bills' club shou-ld be ready to go come Friday night and will be expected to bounce back into the win col-umn should they pick up some steam in the backffield. Coach Bills has been doing some shift-ing of players and hopes to come up with a stronger run-ning combination as well as a tighter defense. In other opening games of the league, Provo will tangle with Orem in the only game scheduled tonight in the re gion. Spanish Fork goes to Payson Friday. All teams in the league will be gunning for the highly fav-ored Orem Tigers who have handily romped through a successful pre-seas- schedule. Payson and Provo should bat-tle for second spot with Spr-ingville, Spanish Fork and Carbon playing the spoiler rol-es. Devils lose Players without the services of Dennis Engle, ace halfback, who was injured, Springville was unable to contain a hard driving BY high team here last Wednesday and barely lost 7-- 6. Neither team showed too much scoring punch in the first quarter, but the Dev-ils set up the Wildcat's first score midway in the second quarter on their own seven when the ball was fumbled and BY recovered and scored on the third play. The Springville line failed to keep the wildcats out and the extra point kick was blocked. In the final quarter the Devils were again knocking at the Y goalline, but failed to score. We suspect that this repetition of a successful formu-la doesn't mean that there's a dearth of creative talent in the industry. It's just that, if some-one came up with a great new idea, something that had never been done before, it wouldn't get off the ground. Viewers would never have a chance to judge it, because no one would take a chance on doing something that hadn't been done before. There is much to be said for "playing it safe." Taking risks unnecessarily can be a vice, too. But it's well to remember that nothing truly original, truly crea-tive, truly great, ever came about by playing it safe. The great strides in human history have been made when someone had the courage to gamble, and' to strike out on his own.
